San Diego Comic Con passes went on sale on February 16, but what exactly can we expect from this year’s entry into the 4-day festival of geek fandom? Will Marvel and DC make big reveals in their comics and films? What big movie studio will blow us away? Can we expect a AAA gaming title to be revealed? I don’t have the answer, but when it comes to Comic Con, speculation is bliss.
It’s a safe bet that we can expect plenty of superhero movie news from the the comic book meccas Marvel and DC. With “Iron Man 3” and “Man of Steel” quickly approaching, we can expect some shocking news from each of the comic powerhouses.
The Thor and Captain America sequels are a safe bet to be shown, as well as the current plans for “The Avengers 2,” but Marvel is bound to have a few surprises up their sleeves, as they do every year. Will this be the year we get an “Ant Man” trailer?
With DC focusing mainly on “Man of Steel” and “Justice League”, and rumors of a Green Lantern reboot, anticipation is slim for what they have to offer. DC is taking a different approach than Marvel to building their cinematic universe by introducing many of their characters through an ensemble film such as “Justice League” rather than giving each character its own headlining film (excluding Superman). Marvel did the exact opposite and was hugely successful, so it’s hard to see DC pulling off the same feat.
Of course, there is one big name that is sure to shock the world at this year’s convention. One that shot the name of film into a new galaxy. Of course, i’m talking about Star Wars. Disney is destined to give the saga a huge comeback into popular culture, and with JJ Abrams (Star Trek, Super 8) confirmed to direct, and a script by Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) pacing to the finish line, more news in the legendary franchise is sure to be revealed. Adding to the fact that standalone characters such as Boba Fett and Han Solo their own films to match, Lucasfilm has a lot of work to be done, and it just might pay off.
On the gaming side of things, speculation is surprisingly quiet, which is a rarity these days.
This is the same place where “Street Fighter X Tekken” and blew the roof off. Many things in the gaming world were possible after that, but unfortunately, things have been kept undercover until the full show. The only thing we can really guess will be revealed is details for the newest Assassin’s Creed game, which is said to be in a time period unheard of in the franchise’s previous entries.
A company that hasn’t made big announcements at Comic Con that might this year is Nintendo, as they have lately been revealing new game every two months with their Nintendo Direct campaign. If this is the case, we can expect good news regarding the Zelda franchise, as well as updates on their other IPs.
So what do you think? Do you think this year’s Comic Con will please the geek fans they’ve pleased for so many years? Or are you afraid that this year’s foray of popular culture will be the tipping point for the Con? Personally, I think it’s only going to get bigger, with many surprises to keep the fans smiling and on their toes. One thing is for sure: July 18 can’t come soon enough.
