‘John Wick’ is James Bond Meets Jason Voorhees

February 13, 2017

“John Wick Chapter 2” blasts into theaters on Friday Feb. 10. The movie sees the title character, retired hitman John Wick, set off on yet another crusade of violence, violence, and more violence. There are several things the movie gets oh-so-right.

The movie does a spectacular job of transporting the audience to the mysterious criminal world John Wick lives in. A world filled with assassins living in the shadows of society while simultaneously operating within their own criminal underworld. Fans of the original can expect to see many of John Wick’s old connections to the criminal class, like Orelio the chop shop owner and Jimmy the cop, who both return for the sequel.

Fans can also expect to see the creative and beautifully gory fight sequences synonymous with the franchise. Keanu Reeves delivers judo throws that would make Ronda Rousey blush and the shooting scenes are straight out of a video game. Yes, there are many things this sequel does just as well if not better than the original. But the movie is not without its faults.

“John Wick: Chapter 2” knows what it is and does not try to be something it’s not. There’s just enough plot to justify John Wick’s adventure, but do not expect to find a deeper meaning or compelling story in the plot. This is not the next installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise; Chapter 2 is the R rated action movie classic audiences have not seen since Die Hard.

Audiences will also not enjoy Chapter 2 if they cannot suspend their disbelief after hearing a few generic, villainous and cringe-worthy lines. These lazy one liners from villains are naturally present throughout the film.

No movie is perfect and Chapter 2 is no exception, but it is a rollercoaster all the way through. Moviegoers will enjoy it as long as they stay on the ride and do not overthink it; but rollercoasters are not for everyone, so watch accordingly.
