As the fall semester at Fresno City College began, the Student Success Club opened its doors to FCC students. With 10 active members, six officers, and four voting members, plus 160 signature members and two staff members, the club’s own goal is to help reverse the 70 percent student dropout rate at FCC.
“It’s important for the club members that we help the other students on campus, and the students need to know that this club exists to help them,” says Wallace Whips, Vice Chairman of FCC SSC.
The student success club offers the “three P’s”: peer outreach, peer leadership, and peer enrichment.
“We offer this to the student so she or he can reach their most challenging goal by guiding them to the right resource that will help them with whatever problem they may have, in their studies, needing tutoring, or developing an education plan with a counselor.” said Whips.
The club’s initial paperwork was turned in this semester and the Success club is now able to run properly. “This semester is all about forming the concept and next semester, is going to be about getting the club running,” said club member James Miser.
“Over these last 10 years, this concept has developed and developed.“
Another of the club’s goals is that they want every student to have success, and their college experience to be a time of having fun while learning, “so they leave Fresno City College with a certificate or diploma and remember what a wonderful time they had while achieving this goal,” said Whipps.
Students may join this club and be part of their activities, by attending their club meetings at the student center.
The club consists of fund raising activities, and once a member, the students may help with these events. The club is setting-up a scholarship fund to assist students with their studies. “We just got our C capital for our scholarship” says Miser.
Student Success Club is always looking for new members. They meet every Monday from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm in the senate chambers at the student center.
