The Associated Student Government approved a $500 payment to the Chicano Latino Studies program to cover the cost of a film screening and the travel expenses of two Arizona community college students.
ASG voted to fund the proposal by Professor Matt Espnioza Watson during its meeting on Tuesday.
The Arizona students will speak at Fresno City College on May 2 after the screening of “Precious Knowledge,” a film about the state of Arizona’s Senate Bill 2281, which cut and eliminated ethnic studies, notably Latino studies, from high schools. Espinoza explained the bill was an extension of the Grand Canyon State’s moves against illegal immigration.
Legislative Vice President, Nathan Alonzo, who chaired the meeting, repeatedly raised concerns that approving the proposal and its other costs would be funding a politically motivated event. However, Student Activities Director Sean Henderson brushed off Alonzo’s concerns, saying it would be worthwhile to help Watson and the Chicano Latino Studies program.
