Fresno City College interim president Tony Cantu will drop the “interim” in his title and become the next president of California’s first community college on Wednesday. The Board of Trustees appointed Cantu to the permanent position on Tuesday.
Cantu has served as interim president of the college since April 2011, replacing former president Cynthia Azari, the college’s first female president. Cantu’s selection makes him the the college’s second Hispanic president.
Cantu said he was “excited and honored” to be chosen.
According to Student Trustee Christopher Coronado, Cantu was offered a three-year contract worth $186,000 per year.
CORRECTION: The previous edition of this story said that Cantu would begin as president of Fresno City College in July. He will begin as president on Wednesday, April 4.
