Associated Student Government Senator James Demaree criticized President Nathan Alonzo over senatorial appointments made on August 7.
“He has decided to elect his personal friends,” alleged Demaree, “and people coming out of high school who also may be his personal friends.”
The criticisms, posted on YouTube as Demaree’s “Weekly Address,” came soon after the close of the ASG meeting.
In response to the senatorial appointments, Demaree proposed an amendment that would modify Article III, Section 3, Clause (b) of the ASG Constitution. Currently, the Constitution delegates senatorial appointments to the President, “with consent of the Student Senate.”
That responsibility, according to Demaree, should fall on the Senate.
“At the end of the meeting,” said Demaree, “I proposed that we amend the constitution to allow the Senate to appoint senators with a two-thirds vote.”
The proposal, however, has yet to reach the floor.
President Alonzo, meanwhile, offered no comment.
