Dr. Brice Harris, former president of Fresno City College is the new chancellor of California Community Colleges. Harris is the 15th chancellor to lead the 112-college system, the largest system of higher education in the country.
Harris’ appointment was announced today during a press conference. He served as the sixth president of FCC, from Dec. 1, 1991 to Oct. 20, 1996.
“It is humbling to be asked to lead such a tremendous system of colleges serving the educational needs of California,” Harris said. “The California Community Colleges have helped educate generations of citizens, and these colleges are even more important to the future of our great state.”
According to information released by the California Community Colleges chancellor’s office, Harris served as chancellor at Los Rios for nearly 16 years, during which two local bond measures which funded facilities improvements were passed, leading to huge increases in enrollment.
He paid homage to his predecessor and the board of governors for their work in the areas “related to improving student success.” Harris said this foundation provides “all a clear road-map to a better future for our colleges and for California.”
Current FCC president Tony Cantu is not surprised by the appointment of Harris to the position and believes that he will do well. Cantu is also optimistic of Harris’ future leadership.
“I was very pleased to hear the news that Dr. Harris has been appointed. I can’t think of anyone more capable than Dr. Harris to lead our community college system during these challenging times,” said Cantu.
