*UPDATED* Additional ASG resignations were added to the original article.
Nathan Alonzo resigned from his position as the president of the Associated Student Government of Fresno City College yesterday.
The resignation is related to allegations that Alonzo and some members of the ASG drank alcohol and used drugs at the CCCSAA conference in October despite signing a code of conduct pledge not to use alcohol and drugs, regardless of their ages.
Alonzo is the sixth member of ASG to resign in the last 11 days. Other members that resigned include Legislative Vice President Rachel McKinley, Executive Vice President Caitlin Mack, President Pro-Tempore Rene Villa, and Senators Desteni Battle and Hugo Garcia.
“I felt that there would be too many distractions if I stayed and if others stayed as well,” Alonzo said.
ASG’s participation at the CCCSAA conference cost $10,158 and was paid from the student representation fee collected from FCC students. These fees are designated to be used for student advocacy and for leadership development, the intended purpose of conferences like CCCSAA.
The controversy was inflamed by the resignations of two of ASG’s executive board; former LVP McKinley and former EVP Mack both resigned as the events of what took place at CCCSAA unfolded for “personal reasons.”
“To me, the organization is more important than us as individuals or whatever ambitions we may have,” Alonzo said. “At the end of the day, the organization needs to get back to the purpose which is representing the students of the college.”
ASG is having an unofficial meeting in place of its normal Tuesday meeting at 3 p.m. today. The purpose of this meeting is to explain the process of replacing Alonzo and how to achieve that as soon as possible.
“This is something that Nathan felt was for the best,” said Monique Reyna, ASG representative. “We have no choice but to respect his wishes and just move on.”
