A truck caught fire in Fresno City College’s Parking Lot D tonight.
“We were talking and then out of the corner of my eye I noticed that the front of the truck was on fire,” said Jessica Marmolejo, an FCC student.
The fire broke out around 6:40 p.m. and within minutes firefighters were on the scene along with campus police.
“There was a guy standing there; I was assuming it was the owner of the truck because he was making the headlights flash.” Marmolejo continued, “But then I realized that it’s highly doubtful that the owner of the truck would leave his car on fire.”
A police officer on the scene said it was an apparent electrical fire. “The fire department [classified it] as an electrical fire,” said Officer Felipe Uribe.
Police say there is no evidence of foul play, however, several witnesses on the scene said otherwise.
Chelsea Pittman, an FCC student, said she was standing near the car when the fire started. Pittman said there was a white male, wearing glasses in his early 20s in front of the car at the time.
“I was walking on the curb, and he was bent down in front of the truck and sparks started happening,” Pittman said. “The sparks started getting bigger and bigger so I walked over here, and then I called 911.”
Although signs point to a car theft gone wrong, no one has come forward to police with information to that end.
“I wish somebody would have come up to us, no one ever told us anything,” Officer Uribe said. “If anybody saw anything, you can refer them to us.”
