More than 5,000 volunteers worked on street corners through the Central Valley for “Kids Day” on Tuesday, March 5. Volunteers sold the Kids Day edition of The Fresno Bee. The money raised by the event goes to help Childrens Hospital Central California. This marked the twenty-sixth year of the event.
Molly Eide, development coordinator at Children Hospital said the funds raised would “help cover the greatest needs of the hospital.”
Eide, who is in her first year of organizing the event, added that the money would help the hospital reach their goal to “make injured and sick kids better.”
“Many doctors, nurses and staff members of all levels from the hospital also volunteer by selling the papers,” said Eide.
Fresno City College students also got in on the action by setting up at several corners and selling the paper. Members of various FCC clubs claimed the corners of McKinley and Blackstone. These clubs included the Associated Student Government, Student Activities, the Hmong American Student Association and The Social Work Students Association.
“We are trying to sell and get donations because we know a lot of kids stay at valley childrens. They need that money and they can use those funds,’ said Pa Vang, a special education teaching major.
Margaret Klassen, an FCC student who has participated in the event for 5 years said “we have a friendly competition between clubs this semester. Last year, the club that raised the most money had $800.”
The goal of this year’s event was to make $480,000 for the hospital.
The special edition paper included the regular edition of The Fresno Bee and stories about patients and doctors at the hospital.
