The student at the center of education instructor Brian Calhoun’s arrest on Friday said she is afraid to return to Fresno City College because of chances of running into her assailant.
A visibly bruised Kevynn Gomez, journalism major and Rampage reporter, said Calhoun followed her out of her classroom where he threw her up against a wall.
Gomez said the incident began during her Chico Latino Studies class which meets in OAB 216 at 10 a.m. The class, usually taught by Matt Espinoza-Watson who was away at a conference, was held by a substitute.
“We were supposed to take our midterm that day,” Gomez said. “But because he was a sub, he didn’t really know where to find the test.”
Gomez said that the mix-up with the test took approximately 10 minutes to resolve, so the students started the test late.
Calhoun’s class, Survey of American Education, is at 11 a.m., directly after Gomez’s class.
“Right away, [Calhoun] was really upset” that the class was still going on when he arrived, Gomez said.
Calhoun was really insistent that the class leave so he could use the room, saying things like, “’You guys need to get out of here’ and ‘you’re not supposed to be here,’” Gomez said.
Gomez said that when the substitute asked Calhoun for a few more minutes, Calhoun told the man that they needed to leave. Gomez also said that Calhoun got more and more “belligerent” with the substitute instructor and stood in the classroom, leading several students, she included, to leave without finishing their midterm and turned in what they had completed.
As Gomez walked out of the classroom and passed by Calhoun, she said, “Piss off a—hole,” and proceeded to walk into the hallway. Calhoun followed her.
“I turned around, and he was coming at me, and then he grabbed me and pinned me against the wall,” Gomez said.
Gomez said she shouted at Calhoun to release her but he yelled at her, saying, “Who do you think you are?” and “You can’t say that to me.”
Then Calhoun tried to forcefully drag Gomez back into the classroom while she struggled to get away from him. He wouldn’t let her go.
“I got one of my hands free and I started hitting him,” Gomez said. She said she wanted to free herself from him.
Nothing worked and things seemed to escalate, and Calhoun lifted her and then threw her onto the floor, Gomez said.
Gomez has bruises on her knee where she landed on the floor, as well as some bruises on her arms where Calhoun allegedly grabbed and pinned her against the wall.
“He tried to get on top of me,” Gomez said, but other students in the hallway who witnessed the altercation pulled Calhoun away from Gomez and helped Gomez to her feet.
Gomez remembers seeing Calhoun struggling to free himself from those restraining him from inflicting more injuries on her.
Calhoun, 69, was arrested and cited with assault and battery according to a statement released by a representative of the State Center Community College District.
“[Calhoun] was released and the investigation is continuing,” the press release stated.
Calhoun is an Army veteran and is a former Fresno City council member. In 2004, Calhoun was charged with driving under the influence, and he eventually pled guilty.
Gomez transferred from Notre Dame de Namur, a private Catholic university in Belmont, Calif and is in her first semester at FCC.
Fresno City College is currently on spring break. Classes will resume on April 1. None of the officials at the college has responded to requests for interviews regarding the incident and whether or not the administration has placed any restrictions on Calhoun and what would become of his classes.
Calhoun has yet to respond to requests for a statement.
