Forty- five different colleges and universities setup booths at Fresno City College for Transfer Day on today. More than 40 schools from the California State and University of California systems attended the event.
“It is the one major event that we have on campus, where students can get information directly from the universities that are here,” said Leticia Canales, Transfer Center coordinator.
Although the transfer center does attempt to put on some events throughout the year, none have the impact of Transfer Day.
“We normally host Fresno State recruiters throughout the year; UC Merced and Fresno Pacific, those schools are usually here on a more regular basis,” said Canales “As for other schools that aren’t here as much, we try to do a lot of virtual things with the [Universities of California] and students can set that up to meet with them on that.”
The event is part of a larger recruiting effort put on across the state for the many qualified students in either high schools or community colleges.
“These schools are on somewhat of a roadshow from September until the application process begins [November 30],” said Canales.
While the event is a recommended way to start thinking about the transfer process, the Transfer Center advocates starting the process as soon as possible.
“If you are a first year student, you may think that ‘this isn’t for me’ or ‘I’m not ready to transfer yet’ it still is a good idea to go out there and start thinking of where you may want to go,” said Canales. “Start asking questions, it can pay off in the long run.”
It is suggested that students not only attend transfer day, but visit a wide array of booths to receive a diverse selection of information to use during the choice of if and where to transfer to.
“A student would need to look at their interest,” said Canales. “Their major and whether or not they have completed the required courses to be admitted into that university.”
