**UPDATE March, 24, 2015 at 12:28 p.m.: Judy Gutierrez, 22, of Fresno, pleaded guilty on March 23, 2014 to violating federal law by making a false bomb threat according to the office of United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner. Gutierrez is scheduled to be sentenced by United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii on July 27, 2015.**
Classes were cancelled in Fresno City College’s Math/Science building today due to an anonymous email threat.
At approximately 7:30 a.m., “a threatening email was received by an instructor and was taken seriously,” said FCC Marketing Director for the Public Information Office, Cris Bremer. Bremer received an emergency text message at 8:22 am that notified students, faculty and staff about the emergency.
“We’ve had some threats and for safety’s sake we’re going to go ahead [and] leave this building evacuated. We’ve checked and there’s nothing inside that’s out of the ordinary, but just as a precautionary matter, we’re just leaving the building vacant for the rest of the day,” said Darren Cousineau, Environmental Health and Safety Director.
Voice over IP phones, which are installed in every classroom and operate through internet connections, alerted faculty and students in the occupied Math/Science building located on the southeast side of campus. Walkways and streets were cordoned off with yellow tape and police vehicles. Traffic in the area was diverted to keep students and staff away from the building.
Around 10 a.m., district police completed their search and began to open up the walkways and streets around the building. Yellow tape and signs close off access to the building for the rest of the day. The Math/Science building will be open again tomorrow.
