The Fresno City College Native American Inter-Tribal Students Association hosted an educational conference for local area students on Nov. 13, 2014.
An unveiling of a rock commemorating the grounds between the Theater Arts building and the faculty offices as the Yokuts Plaza was the main event.
Yokuts Plaza was dedicated to the Yokuts tribe who historically used the land that FCC was built on.
“This is an important day, now everyone who comes here will know that this is native land.” said Erik Escovedo, vice president of NAISA. “This was, is and will forever be the land of the native people.”
Bernard Navarro, American Indian Studies instructor says the event is mainly to remind everyone how much the land means to the Native American tribe.
Navarro said, “We hope to have more monuments and more tributes so that we can educate about a proud people and history.”
