A brief fire in north Fresno knocked out power to about 70,000 customers Thursday, including Fresno City College where classes were ended early.

Pacific Gas and Electric representative Denny Boyles said a fire broke out at the Gregg Substation near Highway 99 and San Joaquin River in north Fresno and caused the major power outage. At 4:30 p.m., PG&E crews were working to restore power to customers.

FCC Public Information Officer Kathy Bonilla said Thursday that classes at the college were cut short by the outage which reached the campus in central Fresno .

“[FCC] is expected to open as usual on Friday,” Bonilla said.

About 5:30 p.m., Boyles said all customers had their power restored. PG&E was investigating the further cause of the outage.
