Fresno City College student activities, in association with California State University Fresno’s Department of Recreation Administration, put on a talent show on March 22 in FCC’s cafeteria.
“This special event was opening up opportunities for [those] who have talent but just need an opportunity to perform,” said CSUF student intern, Jesus Luviano.
Three judges were appointed to decide a winner among 17 performers: Danny Salas of Q 97.1, Ernie Garcia of FCC’s Extended Opportunity Programs & Services and Alyssa Abbott, Ambassador for Grand Canyon University.
The performances were covered by Movimiento Latino Show with the first place winner of the contest being invited to perform on the show, according to Luviano.
Second place received a trophy and third place received coupons from sponsors and local businesses.
The the talent show allowed students in the audience to see the various talents that were hiding on campus.
Linda and Lisa Yang performed a contemporary dance piece dressed in bright green silk and decorative golden jewelry. The two make up a dance group called Ntxhais Nkauj Huam.
Poet Roy Cammon performed a piece entitled, “A Letter to My Future Son” about the struggles of an African American boy growing up in today’s society.
Ciper, a group of student friends at FCC, performed a dance piece involving lip syncing. Despite not being involved with any club on campus, the group managed to choreograph an entire three minute piece.
English Major Misty Rangel showed she can do more than just write papers; her contemporary dance solo incorporated a tambourine.
The show also featured two special guests, D&J Dance Group and Lina Limah, a nursing student from Nigeria.
Voice performance major Ralph Edwards won the competition when he sang a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Versace on The Floor.”
Audiences cheered and clapped along as Edwards belted out the melody, Edwards has performed at many of FCC’s musical events and decided to showcase his voice for yet another audience.
