Students get a Chance to Meet Donors Before Scholarship Ceremony
August 12, 2017
Just before the start of the new fall semester, Fresno City College and the State Center Community College Foundation awarded scholarships to 214 students at the Old Administration Building auditorium on Aug. 11.
Scholarship recipients were invited to a meet-and-greet at the FCC cafeteria with the donors of their scholarship prior to the scholarships being handed out at the OAB auditorium.
The award ceremony began with the SCCC Foundation executive director and master of ceremonies Rico Guerrero welcoming students, their families and scholarship donors to the ceremony. Guerrero introduced a video highlighting the contributions of Don and Carol Munshower, the donors of the Pay-it Forward Scholarship.
FCC president Carole Goldsmith spoke to the audience about how students should take advantage of the opportunities that scholarships gives students. She also told students that once they work hard and achieve success, they too can pay it forward by donating their own scholarship some day.
Student speaker Yaritza Reyes, the recipient of the Don Munshower scholarship, talked to her peers about how sometimes it’s hard to achieve success while in college and how scholarships help students get through hard times.
Guerrero began the presentation of the awards with help from the director of financial aid and scholarships Mikki Johnson, and Goldsmith who presented the awards to the students.
“This scholarship means a lot to me, it means I get to stress less,” said Carlos “Chuck” Rodriguez, recipient of the Daniel Bailey Scholarship. “Scholarships are pretty obtainable as long as you put in some work; the money is there and donors are willing to help.”
