ASG Lending a Hand, Offers Book Loans
Fresno City College’s Associated Student Government is once again offering a book loans to help cover cost of books for approved students.
Once every semester, ASG gives out a $100 book loan to students in need. Each student is given a credit up to $100 that is redeemable at the FCC Bookstore for their required textbooks.
Requirements to apply are be enrolled in at least nine units, a current ASB ID card, with a 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA.
First time FCC students who are applying are excluded from the GPA requirement.
Loans for spring 2022 are over, but students who are interested in the book loan for future semesters can find applications in the Student Services Office, located in the Student Lounge next to the cafeteria.
Students who received the loan have one month to pay back their balance to ASG, where it then gets put into a revolving fund account for the next semesters’ book loans.
First-year FCC student, Maynhia Thao said she did not know the ASG offers a book loan for the students.
“I think it’s nice to know there is always another option to buy books if students aren’t able to qualify for financial aid,” she said.
Although the book loan has been around for at least 15 years and is applicable to all students who meet the requirements, it is on a first come, first serve basis.
Heather Gray, office specialist for FCC Student Services said there were six students who applied and received a loan this semester. In a typical year, Gray said roughly 20 students would apply.
She believes that the number of applications will go up when more classes are back in-person.
“We [Student Services staff] are hoping that as more students come back on campus, there will be more students who are able to take advantage of this loan,” Gray said.
