Fresno City College wrestling’s 2010 season is underway as the Rams are looking forward to another run for the state title.
The Rams have a tradition of being one of the best teams in California throughout past years.
In the last five years they’ve placed in the Top 10 in California. Last year’s Fresno City wrestling in 2009 took 3rd place at state, while the 2008 squad won it all.
This year, FCC has started their season off winning both invitational tournaments.
The Rams won their first tournament at Sacramento City and their second tournament at West Hills showing they’re a force to be reckoned with.
FCC wrestling coach Paul Keysaw says that even with the recent success, the team tries to make sure not to get too confident.
“Wrestling is a humble sport,” Keysaw said, “We can only take one tournament at a time right now.”
With returning sophomores Martin Rubalcaba (133 lbs.), Lucas Keene (197 lbs.), and new incoming wrestler Martin Fabbian (174 lbs.), FCC has the motivation and techniques to place at State in late December.
Rubalcaba, who took fifth place at the state tournament last season, could be returning but this time with a better ending. He provides a leadership role to other teammates giving them the distinctive edge practicing with a championship contender.
Rubalcaba explained what his expectations are for himself for the 2010 season.
“My goals for this season are to help my team win a championship, and to become state champion myself,” Rubalcaba said, “If our team keeps working hard, I don’t see why we can’t win and become State champions.”
In order to get to that level, Rubalcaba describes a method that his father taught him to prepare himself for each match.
“My dad had always told me before my match to take seven minutes to get into my zone, and try to worry about my game not his,” said Rubalcaba.
With that motivation going into each match Rubalcaba will be on everyone’s mind in December during the State wrestling championship
Keysaw, a fellow champion himself, was a Pennsylvania State High School Champion in 1986 and runner-up in 1985. In 1991, Keysaw won a national title in the 190-pound weight class. He provides the Rams with the focus, motivation and stamina to become champions.
“This is only the beginning,” Keysaw said. “We prepare for the end of the year. One step each tourney.”
As the Fresno City College wrestling team progresses throughout the season they will be rooted for from their fellow classmates and students at FCC.
The first home match for FCC will be Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
