After a slow start to the season, the Fresno City College softball team has turned things around. Following a record of 4-6 in February, the Rams now sit on top of the Central Valley Conference with a record of 8-1.
Head Coach Rhonda Williams is in her 17th season as the head coach.
“Our defense is doing much better than we were at the beginning of the season and our team is really coming together as a team to figure out the whole team concept,” said Williams.
“It’s fun having a different team every year. It’s about figuring things out and working towards our goal which is winning the Central Valley Conference Championship.”
This month the Rams dominated the Ohlone Tournament.
They played six games in two days, won five of the six games and beat three ranked teams en route to winning the tournament.
“They realized that they had the potential to be a really good team” said Williams.
“Early on in the season we just were not getting everything going in the same direction at the same time.
Things are starting to come together. We are starting to really hit the ball, score some runs and not leave so many runners on base.”
Sophomore center fielder Cierrah Mullins adds that the team had to work harder at getting along with each other.
This season the Rams have heavily depended on the leadership of Mullins and pitcher Vanessa Salinas.
Mullins is currently leading the team in hits while Salinas has recorded the second most strikeouts in the CVC.
“She (Salinas) is definitely our go to in the circle,” said Williams.
“I would say those (Mullins and Salinas) are probably our two big ones right now as far as pitching and hitting, leading the team.”
Against Porterville, Mullins hit a home run and Salinas pitched a shutout to lead the Rams to a 2-0 victory.
The challenge they face and will continue to face throughout the rest of the season is the youth of the team and defense.
“Every game we have at least one error,” said Mullins.
“If we clean up the defense we will be unstoppable.”
