Fresno City Golf Coach Rhonda Williams is ready to lead her group of golfers on a quest to capture a championship. The six women on the squad are excited about the new season which started on Sept. 6 with a second place finish at Fig Garden Golf Course. The team comes off a fourth place finish at the Northern California Regional Championships in 2011.
The team is made up of three sophomores and three freshmen. “It’s balanced out real well. Last year the team was made up of six freshmen fresh out of high school so it was a little rough. This season, we have returning players with a full season of experience,” said Williams. “Our ultimate goal is to win the CVC [Central Valley Conference] championship and also qualify for postseason as a team.”
Williams, who has been the coach since 1999, says “I think this is one of the better teams we’ve had in a while, we have some good players.”
The word potential frequently comes up when describing the upcoming season and their chances for victory. Sophomore golfer, Maxine Garcia said “I feel better about this team than last season’s. I feel like we improved and I think this team has more potential to win.”
As bright as the future looks for this young group they are the first to admit that they have many aspects of their game to improve. “We’re going to do good,” freshman Ariana Lopez says. “We have room for improvement but I think we are going to do good.”
Pena says “we have a lot of potential to win but we need to focus and give it our best.” Each player has different aspects of their game that they would like to improve ranging from mental game, long game to putting but all can agree that winning the league title as a team is a common goal.
