The Fresno City College women’s basketball team extended their winning streak to 15 games with a 91-55 victory against College of the Sequoias on Wednesday.
The Rams put the pressure on COS from the beginning of the game to the end with their full court press. COS used a high tempo offense and tight defense but the Rams stayed aggressive on the offensive and defensive rebounds while getting to the free-throw line more often.
Despite a five minute scoring drought, the Rams held a 34-26 lead with less than a minute to go. A 3-pointer from the Rams’ Karissa Booker and a shot clock violation from COS closed out the first half and the Rams went into the locker room leading 37-26.
Booker sparked the Rams with 4 3-pointers and a total of 15 points in the game.
The Rams came out of the halftime break executing on offense with crisp passing and stepping up the defense.
With 17:35 left to go in the second half, Madison Parrish stole the ball and converted on the other end to push the Rams’ lead to 48-26. Parrish, who is averaging 16.8 points per game this season, scored 13 against COS.
COS called a timeout to combat the Rams surge. They came out of the timeout with more confidence and made some shots while also tightening up their defense but that was not enough against the Rams who used the same strategy to decisively take over the game and expand the lead to 74-43 with 7 minutes to go.
Despite a valiant effort from COS, the Rams pressed in the backcourt until the waning minutes of the game. The Rams’ size advantage and defense proved to be too much for COS in the end.
FCC head coach Brian Tessler was very pleased with his team’s efforts.
“I thought we played really hard and I thought we were unselfish and in the second half that showed. We wore them down,” said Tessler. “We got easy shots and we made easy shots, the tempo of the game was where we wanted it to be.”
College of the Sequoias’ coach, Ray Alvarado, felt his teamed played very hard but was fatigued at the end due to injuries on the roster.
“We were over matched. We played good in the first half and we ran out of gas in the second half,” said Alvarado. “They have a really good team. They’re loaded.”
