During practice on Friday before heading into the Mission Tournament, Fresno City College softball coach Rhonda Williams was tending to a player who was hit in the face during batting practice.
Despite this unfortunate incident, it has been a smooth start so far for the Rams and Williams is optimistic about the future.
The Lady Rams of the diamond have started their season with a 4-1 record.
“We’re looking good so far,” said Williams, who is in her 18th season as softball coach for the Rams. In this early season, the Rams have scored a whopping 45 runs while surrendering just 15 runs to their opponents and hitting for a combined .373.
Although it is early in the season, Williams is confident her team has what it takes to rise to the challenge. If they can continue to hit the ball as well as they have been, and combine that with solid team play, the ladies of the lumber should be a force to be reckoned with during their season.
One of the strong points Williams credits to her team is that they have a good defense.
“Our defense is pretty good right now,” said Williams.
She also gives a nod to the pitching of her young team as a key to their quest for wins. Williams realizes that although her team is young and loaded with freshman, there is enough young talent that can be molded in order to achieve positive results.
No matter the sport, despite the record, wins or losses, coaches always can see room for improvement. Williams is no different.
Williams looked over at her team as they went through practice, tilted her head, smiled, and said “Theres always room for improvement.”
