First season a success for Rams swimming
The Fresno City College women’s swimming team are prepping up for their final swimming meet of the regular season before heading into the conference tournament and state championships.
The Rams are ending their very first season of the newly added swim program.
Despite this, they have racked up quite an impressive resume. They came out strong and won their first swim meet at the Fresno City College invitational on March 19, while also having some breakout athletes like Killey Gill, Rachel Greenmyer and Genevieve Ortiz on their roster.
The Rams have been on a learning curve as they figure all of the things it will take to build a successful program. Since this is the first season for the program there is no risk in trying new things.
Head coach Gianna Rossi takes this season as a learning process in every way for to constantly do better from the start of the season to the end of the season.
“Our athletes have shown a lot of growth from the the start of the season as we improve with every practice, and every meet that we are in.” said Rossi.
Over the course of the season the Rams saw themselves improving with every time they stepped into the pool, despite a small roster. The team has had strong finishes in each meet that they competed in, not only in team performances but in singles competitions.
Each athlete stood out in their particular events. Gill competes in the freestyle event, where she is ranked 18 in the state, just two spots shy of being invited to the state championships.
Every swimmer has their own way sharpening their craft and getting themselves ready for a meet. Greenmyer competes in the freestyle and butterfly events and feels repetition and having the right mindset is key to performing well in these events.
Although they are young and inexperienced at this level, they believe they have the mindset to be successful moving forward for the remainder of the season as well as future seasons to come.
“I feel good about our team and what we have this season as this was our first year and our coaches give us the the mind set for us to do well.” said Greenmyer.
The Rams are looking forward to the their next upcoming swimming meet for the Central Valley Conference on April 20.
Ortiz competes in the 100 meter and feels that her team is in a good spot as they have a good chance to compete for a conference title in both team and individual competitions.
“Even with us having a small sized roster I feel that we have enough talent to compete in this conference and surprise some people along the way.” said Ortiz
