Six players from each team played in the first round of singles matches. However, the overall team scores ended up 3-3 when the single matches were done.
After the singles matches, the players played a round of doubles. Top players Panhia Vang and Lucy Lor of FCC teamed up and won their match against Tiffany Liao and Elita Murtanu of De Anza to win two points for the FCC team score. At the same time, Amy Vang and Linda Vue of FCC teamed up for a doubles match. They lost to Negar Husseini and Yuyu Liu, tying up the overall score for both teams.
The third match for the doubles round consisted of an intense battle between Erin Vang & Bao Vang of FCC against Madi Ng and Elizabeth Chang. Neither team had the point advantage, until the score ended up at 21-20 for FCC. It was FCC’s serve, giving them a chance to score. After a long rally for the final score, the FCC duo won their match to set the score at 6-5 in FCC’s favor.
“De Anza is on the same level as us”, said Erin Vang “Which is why our match was an intense one. We had to follow through with all our serves and hits, and keep our momentum, which ended up paying off for us.”
Coach Kadingo was positive about their lead by one point. “One point can make a significant difference in badminton,” said Kadingo, “We have to score 11 overall team points to win the game, so anything we can score is needed.”
A ten minute break was given to the players, then the second round of singles matches started. Six simultaneous matches were played once again. FCC lost four out of the six matches played, and the score ended up at at 9-8 in favor for De Anza.
The last doubles matches started shortly after. Panhia Vang and Lucy Lor teamed up once again to take on De Anza’s Husseni and Liu. Vang and Lor won their match. However, Linda and
Amy Vang lost their match against Liao and Murtanu, giving De Anza the win with a final score of 10-11, thus ending FCC’s undefeated streak.
“It was good for us to get pushed today, because it will not get any easier from here on out,” said Bao Vang on the match.
“I loved how our team was challenged today,” said Kadingo. “We have to be gracious in winning and losing alike, and today showed our girls that this season will not always be as easy as it has been for them.”
FCC has a tied season record of 6-1. The Rams have one more league match against Skyline college before their conference finals.
