Top-level performance is always expected out of the Fresno City College wrestling team, especially now that they are ranked number one in the state. The Rams continued with their great level of success when they defeated Skyline College 50-0 at home on Oct. 28.
Coming off a cancelled meet where Modesto College didn’t show up for the match, the Rams were more than ready to show the home crowd what they were capable off.
The meet began at 125 pounds where Jacob Delgado from FCC went up against Danny Borrego from Skyline. Delgado dominated throughout the entire match winning the first period 4-2, the second period 7-5, and ending the match with a 9-7 win.
Next up FCC’s Isaiah Perez got an easy win via forfeit at 133 pounds giving the Rams the second win of the meet.
At 144 pounds, the Ram’s Ray Aranda would face Skyline’s David Ortega. Aranda had no problem in the first period where he shut down Ortega 6-0. Eventually going up 10-2 in the second period and finishing up the match in the third period with a score of 13-4 and the win.
One of the most exciting wrestlers to watch at FCC is Dylan Martinez who had a match at 149 pounds against Joshua Acevez of Skyline. Martinez, who is ranked at the top of his weight class in the state had no problem against Acevez, winning the match by technical fall 16-1 in the second period.
FCC’s Josh McMillon who wrestles at 157 pounds got another win for the Rams by forfeit, giving the team a large lead in the meet.
For the 165 pound meet Conrad Lopez of FCC faced Christian Shelley of Skyline. Lopez who’s another of FCC’s top ranked wrestlers, got an easy win over Shelley when in the second period Lopez got the win via technical fall 16-2.
In the 174 pound match up, FCC’s Miguel Ruiz faced Skyline’s Thomas Montserrat. Ruiz had an easy time with Montserrat when in the first period Ruiz pinned Montserrat giving FCC the first win by pin of the match.
Another win came quick when at 184 pounds Victor Vargas of FCC meet Hugo Plancarte of Skyline. Vargas defeated Plancarte by pinning him in the first round much like Ruiz had done in the previous match.
FCC’s Jay Johnson was up next to face Tristan Helin from Skyline at the 197 pound match. Johnson had a little more trouble with Helin than his previous two teammates had with theirs, but the result ended the same with Johnson winning via pin in the third period.
The most exciting match of the entire dual came when the two heavyweights met at the center of the mat. On FCC’s side, Casey Jones was looking for a win that would leave Skyline with zero in for the duel. He would have had to get through Skyline’s Ramon Guzman who is ranked second in his weight class.
Jones struggled in the first period, going down 1-2 and giving Guzman a small lead going into the second period. In the second period, Jones regained control and managed to score more points than his opponent, giving him the lead. For the third and final period, Jones managed to not only control the match, but also to overpower his opponent and finish the period with a 10-4 lead that gave him the win.
The final score for the dual meet was in favor of FCC with an overwhelming 50-0.
“We wrestle great, we had a great match, everybody won, we did some great things out there and we looked good,” said head coach Paul Keysaw. “We have to try and stay at the top of our game. We have keep working hard and win that state title.”
