FCC Women’s Basketball Team Beats West Hills Lemoore
Fresno City College’s women’s basketball team beat West Hills College – Lemoore on Feb. 12, 89-52. Guard Kelsey Valencia had 24 points and 12 rebounds, and Forward Laney Amundsen had 17 points and nine rebounds.
The Rams dominated in the first quarter, ending at 26-7. The second quarter saw a better Lemoore team, ending the half at 45-27.
Lemoore kept the energy up for the beginning of the third quarter, bringing the score to 49-38 by the halfway point. This 11 point lead was the smallest the Rams had all night.
Guard Lexi Valencia said the team got going when they realized Lemoore was catching up. They needed to bring the energy back up and play better defensively, she said.
The Rams went on a 17 point run for the rest of the quarter, ending it at 66-38.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, the score was 83-44. Lemoore went on a 8-6 run for the last few minutes, ending the game at 89-52.
Guard Avery Evans had three 3-point plays, and ended the night with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
“Those are my favorite,” she said about 3-point plays.
The last meeting with West Hills College Lemoore on Feb. 7 resulted in a 118-73 win for the Rams, with Guard Lexi Valencia scoring 28 points, including eight 3-pointers.
The Rams are now on a five game winning streak, and have only two scheduled games left, both of them being away games.
FCC women’s basketball team has won many games this season, with a 22-3 record.
Head Coach Alex Fletcher says that one reason the team is so strong this season is because they bonded during the pandemic.
“We were doing Zoom meetings, Zoom workouts, striving to be a team still, just to be a part of something,” Fletcher said. “I think because of that experience, it’s really made this team a very close-knit family on and off the court.”
One of the team’s most significant moments this season was the 119-25 win over Taft on Jan. 12. Guard Kelsey Valencia recorded a quadruple-double, including 10 steals, and Guard Jasmine Heu scored 38 points, including seven 3-pointers.
The remainder of the women’s basketball team’s schedule will be played on Feb. 16 at Reedley, and on Feb. 18 at Merced.
