Fresno City College Football had its first home game against Sierra College Sept. 7 at Ratcliffe Stadium losing 28-27 to the Sierra College Wolverines.
With the weather hitting close to the 100s, the Rams stormed the field winning the opening coin toss and deferred to the Wolverines.
The game started off slow for the Rams with an offsides penalty on the opening kickoff. The defense for the Rams stood strong and held the Wolverines to a field goal; they would end up missing.
The Rams offense stalled, having them go three-and-out. During the punt the snap was botched and instead of turning the ball back over in Ram’s territory it was picked up and ran for a first down. But the drive would start slow again and they gave it back to the Wolverines.
It was back and forth with each defense dominating the field until late in the first quarter when running back Zavier Ali rushed for 3 yards up the middle to put the Rams up going into the second quarter.
Right before half time the teams went at it, both putting touchdowns on the board. Rams quarterback Alec Trujillo threw a long pass to the back of the endzone to wide receiver Jaylen Garrison and the Wolverines after a 50 yard bomb fumbled into their own endzone, which they recovered for a touchdown.
The Rams entered halftime up 14-7.
After receiving the second half kickoff, Garrison caught a 44 yard touchdown pass putting the Rams up 21-7 early in the third. However, the Wolverines came marching back with 14 unanswered points, tying the game up 21-21.
The Wolverines would add one more touchdown making it 28-21 with the Rams down with about 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Despite having a long touchdown pass called back due to a penalty, the Rams offense stayed strong and threw it to Garrison for a 22 yard touchdown for his third score of the game. But the extra point attempt by the kicker Johnny Enriquez was no good with the score being 28-27.
After getting the ball back, the Rams tried to get down the field and score but turned it over on fourth down. The Wolverines would kneel and take the win 28-27.
Fresno City’s next football game will be at American River on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
