Men’s Golf finished with an impressive second in Conference and fifth place in State.
The men’s golf team wrapped up the season by placing second in Conference and fifth in their State Championship. Competing against eight other teams from Northern California for their Conference.
Coach Tony Caviglia, who has been coaching golf here at Fresno City College for four years reflected on the previous year.
“We didn’t start out real well, but as the season went on, we got better and better. We qualified easily for the state championship,” Caviglia said.
The state championship consisted of a two-day event, taking place at Santa Barbara’s Sandpiper Golf Course. Not having the best start, the team managed to make a strong comeback on the second day of the event.
“We had some real good players, and we had the Player of the Year Conference, in Northern California. My top three players were some of the better players in the state,” Caviglia said.
“Player of the Year,” Giuseppe Aliotti and Chase Foster who came in second in voting in Northern California were named as two of the better players who helped lead the team by Caviglia.
According to Caviglia, the team’s commitment to improving their game and getting good scores contributed to the team’s success.
While the road to the state championship wasn’t easy, the team is composed of six players and five of the scores are added up. The team with the lowest total score wins.
For the team to be prepared, they played a lot of events, playing in a total of 19 events last year.
“We try to put them in situations where they have to perform under pressure and just get them comfortable playing tournament golf,” Caviglia said.
The thought behind this strategy for Caviglia is that by consistently practicing you are going to improve, which is what the golf team did.
Citing the weather as a major challenge throughout the season Caviglia said, “It’s hard to play in wet and windy conditions. Your golf game is a different game when one of those conditions presents themselves. So we have to be able to play through that.”
As the new golf season begins and a new golf team is being formed, Caviglia notes on what he expects from the future team.
“Personally as a coach, I just like when teams get better, wherever they start, they just need to get better,” Caviglia said.
