The Fresno City College’s women’s softball team has come out swinging to start the 2024-25 season. Rams are currently 11-3 as of Feb. 22. With early season success adding fuel to their confidence, Rams have their sights set on a deep postseason run.
FCC softball’s head coach Linda Garza expressed excitement about the team’s potential.
“This group is determined to grow together. Their focus on accountability and effort gives us a solid foundation,” Garza said.
Freshman right fielder Grenelei Finderup credits the early success to the team’s ability to play together as a team and want to succeed together.
“Our dedication to wanting to succeed is also a really big factor,” Finderup said.
Pitcher Sarah Robosa also credits the team’s unity and determination confidence as a major success factor, which has been an improvement since the start of the season.
“We’re more confident on the field, knowing each other’s throws, knowing where everybody’s at, and just getting more comfortable,” Robosa said.
Returning players have stepped up to take on a leadership role, helping hold players accountable. First baseman and left field Sayler Steiner, is embracing her leadership responsibilities.
“We’re focusing on mechanics and keeping a winning mindset,” Steiner said.
Outfielder Jade Huerta credited head coach Garza’s emphasis on accountability as a foundation for the team’s growth and discipline.
“She tells you how it is and pushes you to be your best,” Huerta said.
The Rams strong start includes a dominant 9-0 victory over San Joaquin Delta in their first official game. Robosa said that performance set the tone for the season.
“We run-ruled them, and our bats were just hot from the start,” Robosa said.
With new players and fresh energy, the Rams are focused on sharpening their skills, fostering team chemistry and taking accountability.
“Accountability has been our theme,” Garza said.
Despite the Rams hot start, they acknowledge there’s room for improvement. Finderup is clear about the work that needs to be done to improve on their offense.
“We need to be more patient and confident at the plate,” Finderup said.
Garza’s leadership has been important in keeping the team mentally tough. Robosa said Garza ensures players don’t let pressure overwhelm them.
“She never just leaves us out there alone. She’s always communicating with us and talking us through at bats, which really helps,” Robosa said.
When fighting through tough times players rely on each other’s energy and leadership to stay engaged.
“If the energy is down, someone has to bring it back up,” Steiner said.
Coach Garza emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and staying focused.
“We’re taking it one game at a time, but every matchup is an opportunity to improve and show what we’re capable of,” Garza said.
With momentum on their side, growing chemistry and confidence. The Rams are determined to stay focused and push for a strong postseason run.
“I definitely want us to get to state and come out on top,” Robosa said.
