This is my letter to the editor
Sarah Velaquez is a poli sci teacher at FCC and she said that students find politics interesting but they struggle with understanding the issues that is why I write about politics.
Some people want every voter to be informed, as long as they agree with their perspective. That’s where the buck seems to stop.
The issues surrounding politics kind of remind me of how racism works. When your side is doing the hammering, you can live with it. When the other side starts capitalizing it’s the end of the world. That’s when the naysayer’s all come up with excuses, excuses, excuses to not agree with logic.
Remember, most Southern Conservatives use to be Democrats who loved big government for themselves and small government for the rest of us.

Conservatives Hypocritical Claims of Liberal Bias
by Marcell Dilworth
Liberal bias has been hypocritically used to degrade the stories put out by many media outlets nationwide. The hypocrisy of using the term of those should be pointed out. The term liberal should not be a bad word.
Recently, one of the editors for the Rampage rightfully voiced her concern about not wanting the newspaper to be pigeonholed into a label called liberal bias.
Usually, when a person attaches the label liberal bias to a media outlet, their goal is to deem the outlet irrelevant. They use the term liberal bias in an attempt to discredit whatever point the writer is making, regardless of the facts given by that reporter.
Even some students, when asked what the term liberal meant, defined the word in the negative light. Most people use it in a degrading context, said FCC student Jonathon Martin.
Michele Le Rechetle, a sophomore who is majoring in Biochemistry, stated, “Usually I hear the word flaming in front of the word liberal.”
The negative connotation of liberal seems to be more prevalent in communities that are traditionally white and Republican. The term liberal has been marketed to the people of these communities in a way to discourage them to not vote for a candidate that is perceived to be liberal.
Learning is a life long experience and you’re never too old to learn something new. But, when the issue is politics, many people pigeonhole themselves into a political ideology and close their mind to any sound information that forces them out of their comfort zone and into the learning zone.
Most people consider Abraham Lincoln as one of the greatest Presidents of all time, yet many do not know that the Republican ran under a platform that would be considered liberally biased in today’s media.
In 1860, Lincoln ran under the Republican Party platform that promoted liberal ideas like banning re-opening of the African slave- trade a making it a crime against humanity. The Republican Party supported working men earning liberal wages. The Party also opposed any change in our Naturalization Laws or any State legislation.
Rights of immigrants from foreign lands were abridged or impaired in favor of giving protection to all classes of citizens.
Just think if many of the Republicans in 1860 were members of today’s Republican Party. They would not stand a chance getting elected in most Republican districts.
Joyce Cockron, a white sophomore Radiology student at FCC understands what the term means. “To be liberal is to respect other people’s ideas and beliefs.”
According to the Merriam-Webster on-line dictionary, liberal is defined as someone who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or an established form or way.
The desegregation movement was, not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional, or established forms or ways.
Many, if not most of FCC students would not have the opportunity to attend this college if it weren’t for the White Liberals putting their life on the line to create the free society for all the U.S citizens. Yet, Republicans have made headways putting a negative label on the word liberal.
Effective labeling is a commonly used trick by Conservatives as well as Liberals. Conservatives have just been more effective with their use of labels to outsmart Democrats lately.
During the 1990’s Conservatives did a great job of exposing the Liberal bias in the media by showing examples of interviews and debates with three Democrats and one Republican on the major news networks, such as CNN. They also pointed out how newspapers like the New York Times regularly wrote stories were not fair and balanced stories. I even agreed with them when they pointed out the one-sidedness.
The problem with the Conservative arguments today is that the Conservatives did not and will not live up to the high standards that they expect the mainstream media to live up to. They can give you a litany of excuses for why they refuse to show any balance in their reporting of stories. All of the excuses have hypocrite written all over them.
Take a close look at how Fox News operates. Their top rated shows give their audience a great dose of what they hate in the so-called Liberal media.
