Pieces of famous Soviet composers were given honor to in the Faculty Recital that took place last Saturday in the Recital Hall on campus.
Olga Quercia, head of Piano Studies at Fresno City College, along with Susan Doering and Dieter Wulfhorst perfomed the infamous composers’ works to a full house.
Once the clock hit 4 p.m., the trio began to play songs by composer Joseph Haydn such as Trio in C Major: Allegro, Andante and Presto.
Before each song was played, cellist Dieter Wulfhorst explained the history and the meaning about each song, giving the audience much more of a connection to the various pieces played.
In the last set by composer Antonin Dvorak, Wulfhorst gave a brief explanation about the piece, mentioning the fact that the theme of the set was giving Jewish people hope after the war, which was the intention of the original composer.
Once the trio began playing the piece, the melancholic tunes really seemed to grasp the audiences’ attention.
The trio performed each piece with grace, precision and in a manner which made the lengthy three hour concert seem like a short thirty minute event.
With such talented performers, it was no surprise that the audiences left the building satisfied and moved by the concert.
Olga Quercia, who is the head of Piano Studies at Fresno City College, displayed her talents on the piano.
Having been a past state president of the Music Teachers’ Association of California, member of the Academic Senate, and having received the Dr. Bill F. Stewart Achievement of Excellence Award, Quercia didn’t have any trouble displaying her musicianship with the difficult pieces played.
Susan Doering, the violinist of the trio is most definitely used to the spotlight.
Having performed on televised events such as NPR’s “Performance Today,” Doering’s music has been heard all around the globe. She has also toured the United States and Germany, with highly reviewed shows.
More recently she has been conducting the Middle School/ Junior High Honors Orchestra in Bakersfield, and conducting as well as performing in Sweden.
Finally, Dieter Wulfhorst, who has performed in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia showed off his skills on the cello throughout the afternoon.
Wulfhorst, a highly praised soloist, has been asked to play at prestigious events such as the 6th Tsuyama International All-Round Music Festival in Japan, and more recently gives concerts around the globe.
