The start of a music career can be quite a rocky one. Creating music along with the task of touring can take its toll not only on a band but also on the members. The product that comes stands as a testament to the work and experiences the band has been through.
To many around Fresno, Fireworks is a band that has defeated the odds of fading away once the tough times hit. For years, Fireworks had always included Fresno as a tour stop that crammed all its members (and roadies) in a small touring van. The band toured in the high California temperature only to play in packed garages around town. All of this countrywide touring happened while with a six song EP which caught quite amount of buzz.
The last Fresno show finally paid off for the band. More than 100 fans saw the show at the Starline last November. Since then, the band has signed a contract with Triple Crown Records (the same label that helped launch the career of Brand New, Hot Rod Circuit, and Kevin Devine.) The Detroit-based band traveled to Los Angeles to record with New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert. The result is “All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion.”
The album features a few songs that many Fireworks fans will remember. A few of the tracks were featured on the band’s last seven-inch record, with the same high-energy riffs that were found on their debut EP along with a few twists here and there.
The production by Chad Gilbert infuses a new perspective, leading to a sound that is very similar to his band, New Found Glory. However, what Fireworks brings to the table is quite different. For example, the sing alongs like “Detroit” and “2923 Monroe St.” separate them from the rest of the “pop punk” style bands that are coming out.
For some people, the album may be a bit too “feel good” to be everyday listening. The bubbliness of the band and their hardcore influences create a unique fusion that creates the band’s unique appeal. The band also takes it up a notch with its lyrical content, covering subjects such as their hometown antics, homosexuality, and the relationships that go beyond love.
This year marks a turning point for Fireworks. Recently, they just replaced Shai Hulud on the ‘New Found Glory’, ‘Bayside’, and ‘Set Your Goals’ tour. This summer, the band will also be going on tour with Bridge Nine acts like Polar Bear Club and Crime In Stereo. Even with the band’s poppy appeal, it still enjoys touring with the hardcore punk bands that were early supporters.
Fireworks may be a band that may be thrown in with the likes of Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, and A Day To Remember, but a closer look at the band’s ethics reveal a whole different band. A look into this band will definitely make you ahead of the game. Check them out before they tour with your favorite band or end up on next year’s Warped Tour.
