The Fresno City College Rams rallied from a 10 point first half deficit to defeat Sacramento City 37-28 at Ratcliffe Stadium on Oct. 2.
The victory pushes the Rams record to 3-1 for the season.
“It was a tough game for us,” FCC head coach Tony Caviglia said. “It was a potential trap game coming off the big win against Merced, and it was very hot on the field. We had to really work hard to get this victory.”
Quarterback Lance Orender threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns for FCC. Freshman wide receiver Corvaughn Archie caught seven passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams.
Archie talked about how he was able to have his big day receiving that helped pave the way for a Rams victory.
“The corners were slitting a lot,” Archie said. “I was telling them to throw it deep, so when the fade-route was called, I ran by both of them, caught it, and took it to the house.”
The Rams went up 10-3 late in the first quarter after freshman running back Leighton Settle barreled his way into the end zone with an eight-yard carry in the last 14 seconds of the first quarter.
Things started to turn sour for FCC in the second quarter after Sacramento City quarterback Cody Allen hit wide receiver Jeremiah Oates on a 15 yard touchdown pass to extend the Panther lead to 20-10 with 1:13 left in the first half.
Panther head coach Dannie Walker felt his team had the game in their hands but then handed it over to Fresno City.
“I thought we had them where we wanted them,” Walker said.
“We created turnovers, but we didn’t capitalize on them. I give [credit] to their defense for coming out in the second half and only giving up seven points.”
Caviglia says the adjustments made at halftime paid dividends in the second half.
“We had a great halftime,” Caviglia said. “We made some good adjustments, and kind of wore them out in the second half.”
The Rams will take on Laney College Oct. 9 in Fresno at 7 p.m. before traveling to Modesto on Oct. 16 for another CVC showdown.
